International AIED Conference 2024 in Recife

What an amazing event! The 25th AIED Conference could celebrate a round anniversary and a unique event in Brazil.

More than 500 experts from all continents and regions worldwide came together, a record in the conference history.

And it was the first time that the leading AIED conference was meeting in Latin America with strong participation and recognition, also by policy makers and mass media from Brazil.

AIED 2024 was inviting and welcoming all international researchers and practitioners working in the fields of AI and Education (AIED). We could discuss the most pressing questions and share latest research results in lively debates and workshops. And excellent keynotes were opening the views and introducing into broader questions on pedagogical, political and societal challenges related AI and Education.

Prof. Dr. Blaženka Divjak from the Univesity of Zagreb and former Croatian Minister of Science and Education underlined the importance and complexity to navigate strategic challenges in education impacted by two major unprecedented events which have had a strong transformative effect: the COVID-19 pandemic and the rapid spreading of AI: https://aied2024.cesar.school/program/keynotes-and-panel#h.hqhl91h8vk9k

Dr. Peter Clark from the Allen Institute for AI (AI2) discussed how Large Language Models (LLMs) has entered and significantly changed the landscape in education and beyond. His description of the evolution led to the presentation of an AI Research Assistant for collaboration with researchers to solve research questions together, learning from each others’ strengths: https://aied2024.cesar.school/program/keynotes-and-panel#h.v6h2rmr4r41

Prof. Dr. Seiji Isotani from the Harvard University and new President-elect of the IAIED Society introduced the concept “AIED unplugged” as methodology to create and integrate AI technologies into existing educational ecosystems without requiring infrastructural modifications, consistent internet access, or advanced digital literacy: https://aied2024.cesar.school/program/keynotes-and-panel#h.2kqea68g3su5

I was proud to present the interim results of our Systematic Literature Review on Ethical AI and Education during this prestigous event after peer-review and selection: Together with my colleagues and co-authors Irene-Angelica Chounta and Wayne Holmes, we could identify “Global Trends in Scientific Debates on Trustworthy and Ethical Artificial Intelligence and Education” based on the in-depth analysis of 62 articles.

Furthermore, I was please to organize and moderate the Workshop “Ethical AI and Education: The need for international regulation to foster human rights, democracy and the rule of law”: Together with colleagues, we introduced the current work of the Council of Europe and its appointed AI&ED Expert Group.

The standing Conference of the Ministers of Education from the CoE member states gave the mandate for two objectives: First, the development of an international convention to regulate the use of AI in education as global law. And second, the design of a recommendation for AI literacy as toolbox for the integration into national and regional curricula.
