UNESCO IITE Webinar on Assessment and AI

I am speaking at the UNESCO Webinar “Assessment in Higher Education in the Era of AI and Digital Technologies”, organised by UNESCO Institute for Information Technologies in Education (UNESCO IITE), on 27th of October 2026, 09:00am UTC, online via Zoom.

Alongside Assoc. Prof. Juvy Lizette M. Gervacio (University of the Philippines Open University) and Assoc. Prof. Daniela Gachago (University of Cape Town), I will be speaking on:

“How can digital technologies and AI contribute to more responsible, effective and sustainable assessment policies and practices?“.

My keynote presentation will explore how digital technologies and AI, including generative AI, can support the design and delivery of assessment and feedback in higher education. A special focus will be on the development and implementation of policies, strategies and guidelines for responsible, effective and sustainable assessment. It will consider the potential of open education and approaches such as open-source tools, open standards and interoperable platforms to enable adaptable and sustainable assessment practices. Attention will be given to principles for the responsible use of digital technologies and AI, including privacy, data governance, transparency and equity. Consideration will also be given to the decision making on digital technologies including AI so that they support the educational vision and objectives, align with assessment goals and the needs of diverse higher education contexts.

I will be pleased to report an overview and first results from the ASSAI Project on the responsible and ethical use of AI in assessment: https://assai-project.eu/

And I will introduce our UNESCO UniTwin Network on Open Education (UNOE): https://unitwin-unoe.org/

And I will present our DC4Democracy Project on competence assessment for democratic deliberation in digital contexts: https://dc4democracy.eu/

Together, the three presentations look at how assessment practices are changing, what should guide assessment design and delivery in AI-enabled environments, and how digital and open technologies can support that work responsibly — followed by a moderated discussion. It is the first of two webinars in the series; the second, later in the year, turns to the recognition and validation of learning outcomes.
The session is free of charge, held in English, and open to participants worldwide (requires online registration).
